6 Tips for Blogging and Syndicating New SEO-Friendly Content

Blogging is a great way to keep your site’s content fresh, attract visitors, and perhaps even garner a few backlinks. While it is time-consuming, blogging can be a powerful tool in your SEO arsenal. To get the most out of it, here are some SEO-friendly tips to consider when maintaining your blog:

1. Come Up with a Regular Schedule

Blogging should be done on a regular basis. If the Google finds that your site is constantly being updated, it will crawl it more often, which could mean good things for your rankings. Spend time coming up with a list of blog titles and try to stick to a consistent posting schedule, even if you only have time to do it once a week.

2. Make it Relevant

There are two types of relevance you should be concerned with when writing blog content from a local SEO perspective: niche relevance and geo-specific relevance. Make sure that the topics you are writing about either relate to your specific industry OR to your location. Writing a great mix of articles that focus on either or both will help Google understand what your site is about and where you are located. For example, if you own a yoga studio in Austin, blog topics should focus on things either yoga related, i.e. “Top 5 Yoga Poses to Try this Year”, “Namaste and Other Terms Every Yogi Should Know” or location related, i.e. “Best Austin Smoothie Shops to Cool Off After Sweaty Yoga”, “Top Places to Buy Yoga Equipment in Austin”.

3. Make it Interesting and Readable

If the content is boring to write, it’s going to be boring to readers too. Even if you’re in a boring industry like accounting, you can add some pizzazz by adding comic relief in the form of funny memes, text, or videos. Also, you can make an article more readable by:

  • Using lists and bullet points (see what we did there?)
  • Adding paragraph headers that help the reader grasp the overall message of each section
  • Making it the ideal length for search engines and people. For SEO purposes, your blogs should be at least 300 words; for people purposes, they shouldn’t be more than 700 words.

4. Create a Web of Internal Links

Internal links are hyperlinks that point to other pages within your site. Using internal links not only helps search engines crawl the pages of your site more easily, but are also critical in spreading around link juice. What’s link juice? Link juice is essentially the SEO magic potion (fueled by backlinks) that helps your site to rank for keywords. Adding internal links helps distribute link juice around your site so additional pages are better positioned to rank as well.

5. Use the Yoast SEO Plug-In

If your site was built on WordPress (like we recommend), then you can easily install a myriad of helpful plug-ins. When it comes to blog posts, one of our favorite SEO plug-ins is the Yoast SEO plug-in. Yoast has several metrics that assess the SEO-friendliness of your site like telling you if your content meets the minimum recommended word count, how it fares on the Flesch readability scale, and how the backlinks look.

6. Set up Content Syndication

Pushing your blog content through social media channels is a great way to get additional eyeballs on your articles, but doing it manually can be really time-consuming. To set up an automatic process for doing this, we recommend using IFTTT. This helpful platform enables users to create “applets” that integrate services you use. For example, you can design an applet that says if there’s a new post on your blog feed, then automatically post it to Facebook as well. Using these applets is a great hands-off approach to handling your social media feeds.
